Windows to the Soul: Selected Poems (5)

Pair

He has nightmares with his eyes open.

You always try

to shake him awake

to convince him the monsters are

just shadows,

and the growls are in his head.

But the shadows are those of love lost,

and the growls

are your getaway car roaring

to life.

Hourglass – We all saw it coming

It’s tragic. How you faded to sand

right there in my arms.

I let you run between my fingers and watch

as you trickle down to earth.

Spa Day

I pampered myself today.

I took a bath alone, with rose petals -

fallen soldiers that went to war to die.

“he loves me; he loves me not”

and other cliches.

+

I pampered myself today.

I took a hot shower

(for as long as I could in good conscience -

what with the planet dying and all)

and covered my body in lotions and potions.

I used a sugar scrub to exfoliate.

I tried this new shampoo. And when I

stepped out of the shower,

little bits and pieces of you

were sprinkled all over my tile.

The one with the tattoos

I want your name

tattooed on me

but not because of any

implications of

forever or

ownership.

I want your name

tattooed on me

in the way that

people get birds

or flowers tattooed

I want your name

tattooed on me

in the way that

people can just get

small, silly, tattoos

without even

thinking about it

-

a reminder

to be true to myself

and love freely.

I want your name

tattooed on me

in the way that

people get Chinese

characters tattooed

on their backs

-

something I do not

understand

but will pretend

to the bitter end

that I do

because I want

so badly to.
